2004 Seaborg Award: Donald G. Fleming

Award Statement C&EN (Pages 2-3)

Fleming received a bachelor’s degree in 1961 and a master’s in physical organic chemistry in 1963 from the University of British Columbia (UBC). He received a Ph.D. in nuclear chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1967 where he studied nuclear structure and nuclear reactions in light nuclei.

Fleming’s research was mainly carried out at a nearby cyclotron on the UBC campus, historically known as TRIUMF, which delivers a variable energy proton beam up to 500 MeV, used to produce positive muons (μ+), which in turn led to the production of the muonium atom (μ+e), which acts in matter as the lightest isotope of the H atom.

Felming’s research interests lie in studying the interactions and reactivity of the muonium atom with metal nanoparticle surfaces.
