Faculty Position – Tennessee Technological University

The Department of Chemistry at Tennessee Technological University (TN Tech) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position (9 month contract) in Radiochemistry beginning August 2022. A Ph.D. in radiochemistry, or closely related area (inorganic or analytical chemistry, preferred) from an accredited institution with research interests, training, and experience in the use of radioisotopes to study chemical phenomena is required. Postdoctoral experience is required. The applicant will be expected to establish and sustain a research program involving both undergraduate and graduate students that complements  existing research efforts of the department, including liquid-liquid separations of relevant isotopes from simulated spent nuclear fuel, while vigorously pursuing external support. Competitive startup funds to initiate experiential research with TN Tech students are available. The department strongly encourages interaction with Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the candidate’s area of interest.  Teaching expectations are proposed to be at the undergraduate and graduate level depending on the successful candidate’s background and expertise and could include responsibility for instruction in general, analytical, or inorganic chemistry, in addition to teaching the dual-listed course in radiochemistry, including the associated laboratory, biennially. The successful candidate will also be expected to effectively participate in service activities at the department and/or university level as assigned, in addition to serving the university as the campus radiation safety officer. 

The department has recently relocated to a new interdisciplinary laboratory science facility for research and teaching which includes 1200 ft2 of dedicated space for radiochemistry research.  Extensive investment in instrumentation for research has well positioned the university for expanded outcomes in research.  Recent acquisitions relevant to the position include a 500 MHz NMR spectrometer with broad-band N2 cryoprobe, liquid scintillation counter, γ-counter, UV-vis fluorimeter, ICP-MS, and ICP-OES.  The department maintains a TN Radioactive Material License which allows the use of a wide variety of β / γ-emitting isotopes, as well as smaller quantities of certain α emitters for teaching and research.

Research Fellows – Mayo Clinic

Two Research Fellow positions are available in the Molecular Imaging Program in Rochester, Minnesota with Dr. Mukesh Pandey, Associate Consultant and lead scientist. Focusing on radiochemistry, one of these positions will concentrate efforts in organic chemistry, and the other, on isotopes. These Research Fellows will be part of an integral team of molecular scientists who work on design and development of novel positron emission tomography (PET) probes for various imaging applications.  Our laboratories are well equipped for synthetic chemistry, radiochemistry and Micro-PET animal imaging work. The successful candidates must have experience in this science, and excellent organizational and communication skills.

A Research Fellow at Mayo Clinic is a temporary position intended to provide training and education in research. Individuals will train in the research program of a Mayo Clinic principal investigator. Qualified individuals will demonstrate the potential for research as evidenced by their training and peer-reviewed publications and should become competitive for national research grants. Proof of English proficiency is required for J-1 Short-Term Scholars, Research Scholars, Professors, Specialists, and Student Interns sponsored by Mayo Clinic.

Qualifications

Must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a field deemed relevant by the program. Research Fellow is appropriate for individuals who have completed no more than one prior postdoctoral fellowship, at Mayo Clinic or elsewhere.

Candidates are expected to have expertise in using modern nuclear instrumentation as well as experimental and data analysis techniques. A strong background in instrumentation is essential. The research conducted is primarily funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. All of the research efforts are collaborative in nature, spanning from therapeutic/theranostic radionuclide production to clinical trials evaluating new radioimmunotherapy agents. Our research group develops and evaluates radiochemistry methods that can be applied to produce and purify therapeutic and theranostic radionuclides, as well as development of radiolabeling reagents/chelators used for attaching radionuclides to biological targeting molecules, such as monoclonal antibodies for cancer therapy.  Preclinical research in astatine-211-labeled MAbs conducted by our group has been translated to the clinic and is presently being evaluated in multiple human studies.

The University of Washington Medical Cyclotron Facility is capable of producing variable energy proton, deuteron, alpha and high energy neutron beams for radionuclide production. The Postdoctoral Scholar in our research group will collaborate with UW Materials Science research groups and cyclotron engineers to develop new target designs for irradiations. It is planned that the candidate will visit and work with our collaborators at Los Alamos National Laboratory and University of Missouri to develop purification and radiolabeling methods for the production of medical radionuclides. The radiopharmaceuticals under development will be evaluated in animal models through collaborations with investigators in other research groups at the UW and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The initial appointment is one year, with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2020, and the appointment is renewable depending upon performance and availability of funding.

Faculty Position – UMass Lowell

There is a new faculty position (open rank) for a nuclear chemist/radiochemist at the department of Physics and Applied Physics at UMass Lowell starting Fall 2020. This hire is to strengthen and broaden our Radiological Sciences program to include radiochemistry, nuclear chemistry and/or nuclear forensics research/teaching.
